PBC Announces Women's Basketball Team of Academic Distinction
AUGUSTA, GA — The Peach Belt Conference has released the 2023-24 women’s basketball Team of Academic Distinction, presented by Barnes & Noble College. The team is a part of the PBC’s larger initiative to celebrate the academic achievements of PBC student-athletes.
To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee the program.
Barnes & Noble College currently operates more than 1,400 campus bookstores and their school-branded e-commerce sites, serving more than 6 million college students and faculty nationwide. As a strategic partner, Barnes & Noble College is a retail and learning company. The company is headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the community’s help in searching for 20-year-old Tydarius James.
According to officials, James is wanted for an aggravated assault that occurred on May 1, near the intersection of Glenn Hill Drive and Breeze Hill Drive.
Anyone with information concerning Tydarius James is urged to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at 706-821-1034 or 706-821-1020.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – An organization celebrated Cinco de Mayo ahead of Tuesday’s holiday with a festival Saturday on Madeline Drive.
The West Augusta Six Geter Foundation held its Flavor Street Festival Latin Edition, featuring food including empanadas, nachos, fajitas and desserts.
“We decided to do a rendition for our Latin brothers and sisters Latin fiesta to bring in the Cinco de Mayo holiday, that’s very important to them as well as the community,” said Patricia Geter, West Augusta Six Geter Foundation and community activist. “Each month we hold the street fest to acknowledge different types of cuisines, cultures, and we are hoping to have a car show in the fall for our festival.”
Geter said the organization holds street festivals every first Saturday of the month.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Saturday marked the fifth annual VFW Day of Service with veteran-led community service projects.
The Day of Service started as a way to highlight veterans’ and service members’ efforts of helping their communities after serving. VFW Post 6445 in Harlem served a barbecue lunch for residents at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta on Saturday.
Post leaders said the event is a way to honor the veterans’ service while building camaraderie.
“They all went somewhere, and they survived. You have to be a war veteran to be in here, right? Maybe someone went to war, but we get to leave at the end of the day. They don’t get to leave. And to see a smile on their face, that’s what makes it all worth it while they get to talk to somebody. And when they start to ring them down, you see they all have some kind of hat on, just to see a fellow veteran,” said Ronald Gilchrest, commander of Post 6445.
The VFW service projects will continue throughout the month of May in the U.S.
